Bob Dylan, 5th August – 2nd September 2019

My exhibition of paintings featuring Bob Dylan will be at The Little Gallery at Broad Canvas, Broad Street, Oxford from 5th August to 2nd September 2019.

The year 1941 features somewhere in most of these paintings. This is the year that both Dylan and myself were born and I have been collecting his recordings and taking an interest in his life since the 1960s. For me, as a theme-based painter, this was enough to get me started. Bob Dylan allegedly chose his stage name from Welsh writer, Dylan Thomas, who he greatly admired. As a fan of Thomas myself, it was easy to find Welsh connections to back up the portraits. I have also included places from my childhood in South Wales in these paintings.

Dylan Thomas, 4th February – 4th March 2019

I will be exhibiting at The Little Gallery at Broad Canvas, Broad Street, Oxford from 4th February – 4th March 2019. The exhibition ‘Dylan Thomas’ features 16 paintings of the Welsh poet.

My interest in Dylan Thomas began as an art student in South Wales in the 1960s. One of my first exhibitions as a young painter was to illustrate Dylan Thomas’ 1954 radio play, Under Milk Wood. My more recent portraits were created in response to his centenary year in 2014. Many were exhibited in South Wales and have also been used to illustrate conferences and events in the UK and abroad. Two of the paintings in this exhibition were featured in ‘Dylan Thomas: A Centenary Celebration‘, A book about Dylan Thomas written by his grand daughter, Hannah Ellis.
